Josip Zic named Chief Nuclear Officer and Chris Malcolmson named Director, Health Physics

We’re pleased to announce two new interim appointments – Josip Zic has taken on the role of Chief Nuclear Officer and Chris Malcolmson will serve as the Director, Health Physics.
The appointments were made in response to the retirement of Dave Tucker, Associate Vice-President, Research (Nuclear) and Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO).
Zic earned his BSc in Medical and Health Physics as well as his MSc in Health Physics from McMaster and has been the Director of the Health Physics unit on campus since 2018.
As Interim CNO, Zic will work with the nuclear leadership team to implement McMaster’s Nuclear Strategic Plan and ensure that critical projects, commercial initiatives and research priorities are delivered. He will also work closely with the Vice-President, Research portfolio as long-term planning continues.
Chris Malcolmson will replace Zic as Director, Health Physics (Interim). Malcolmson has been in the Health Physics Department at McMaster University for over 20 years, supporting the implementation of the University’s Radiation Safety Programs.
As Interim Health Physics Director, Malcolmson will work with the Health Physics Managers to oversee the provision of Radiation Safety Services for nuclear activities on and off campus. Chris will also be the main point of contact for McMaster’s regulatory interactions related to radiation safety and emergency preparedness with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Province of Ontario and City of Hamilton.
News“Josip and Chris bring a wealth of experience in nuclear operations and safety to their new leadership roles, making them well-positioned to advance McMaster’s nuclear research and innovation portfolio and ensure the continued safety of all those who work with radiation in our labs and facilities across campus,” says Andy Knights, Vice-President, Research (Acting).
