In Photos: Students explore nuclear careers at annual industry night

Hosted by NAYGN McMaster and Nuclear Operations & Facilities, McMaster’s annual Nuclear Industry Night connected students with industry professionals to learn more about careers in nuclear.
Here are some scenes from the action-packed evening.

Over 220 students attended Nuclear Industry Night and got to network with leaders from 11 companies – including Bruce Power, Ontario Power Generation, Westinghouse, BWXT Canada and AtkinsRéalis – to learn more about co-op opportunities, career paths in nuclear and emerging areas of focus in the industry.
The event also featured a Youth in the Industry panel with McMaster grads Marc Miville and Maha Chaudhry, and NAYGN’s Canadian Regional Lead, Christina Mohan.

Careers in the nuclear industry span a wide range of sectors, including clean energy and environmental science, health and radiopharmaceuticals, radiation safety, engineering and advanced manufacturing.
Curtis Hall from Nuclear Promise X (left) and Dylan Wellman from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (right), share their career paths in nuclear and highlight exciting opportunities for students at their companies.

Students bring their enthusiasm for nuclear science to the event. Did you know the Banana Equivalent Dose (BED) is an informal unit of radiation exposure used to illustrate the levels of radiation that people are exposed to in everyday life? It’s based on the small amount of naturally occurring radioactive potassium found in bananas.

Representatives from Aecon, Canadian Nuclear Isotope Council, Ontario Power Generation and Westinghouse greet students at their booths and share what it’s like working in various roles for some of Canada’s leading companies in nuclear – from providing clean energy to producing life-saving nuclear medicines and advancing innovation in engineering and construction.

At the Laurentis Energy Partners booth, Lise Taylor and Erica Dao talk to students about how they can power up their careers and help shape the future of the industry.

The North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN) McMaster team poses for a photo. The student-run chapter provides opportunities for students to develop leadership and professional skills, create life-long connections and inspire today’s nuclear technology professionals to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
