McMaster professor appointed Program Chair of Canadian Advanced Manufacturing in Nuclear Alliance (CAMiNA)

Last month, the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI) announced the creation of the “Canadian Advanced Manufacturing in Nuclear Alliance” (CAMiNA). CAMiNA is an industry body of representatives from the Canadian nuclear industry, including suppliers, utilities, research organizations, universities, and government entities convened to oversee progress along the “Advanced Manufacturing Roadmap for the Canadian Nuclear Industry” released on January 12, 2022.

CAMiNA will promote greater use of Advanced Manufacturing technologies in the Canadian nuclear industry and advocate for research, development, and application of various Advanced Manufacturing technologies to maintain or improve Canada’s nuclear fleet’s cost, reliability, safety performance, and future SMRs. CAMiNA members will also consult with governments, regulators, and standards bodies on regulations and standards that will facilitate the implementation of additive manufacturing in nuclear applications.

As director of the McMaster Manufacturing Research Institute – a world-class research facility and strategic resource for its industry partners – Veldhuis has earned a reputation as a trusted collaborator and he’s keen to work with CAMiNA’s stakeholders to maximize opportunities for Canada’s nuclear industry.

“This alliance has huge potential for the industry,” says Veldhuis who also holds the Braley-Orlick Chair in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. “Working together across sectors will result in unique collaborations that will increase the advanced and additive manufacturing capabilities and help to position Canada as a leader in SMR technologies.”

Dave Tucker, McMaster’s Assistant Vice-President Research, Nuclear congratulates Veldhuis on his appointment. “This is an excellent example of McMaster’s ability to deploy its expertise across a broad range of fields in support of Canada’s SMR Action Plan,” says Tucker.
